Ryan Gilpin
Founder & CEO
Ryan Gilpin is a pianist, composer, creative director, and arts leader with over 15 years of experience spanning orchestral performance, worship leading, production design, and large-scale event coordination across Australia and the United Kingdom. His career has included collaborations with symphony orchestras, Christian artists, theatre-makers, and educational institutions, as well as work in songwriting, musical direction, choreography support, and creative leadership.
Ryan’s formation as an artist has always been interwoven with ministry. Having grown up in a pastoral family and later training in theology and ministry, he carries a deep belief in the power of beauty, art, and worship to draw people to God. His passion for uniting artistry with discipleship led him to establish the Australian Christian Orchestra & Choir - a movement dedicated to reclaiming the arts for Christ, championing musical excellence, and creating spaces marked by grace, welcome, and spiritual depth.
Ryan brings to the organisation both vision and practicality: a creative imagination for what the arts can become, and a disciplined understanding of event management, team leadership, artistic development, and community building. His leadership is marked by warmth, thoughtfulness, and a commitment to cultivating an environment where musicians, singers, and creatives of all ages can grow, serve, and experience the presence of God through their craft.
The Board's Role
The Australian Christian Arts Board of Directors plays a critical role in steering the organisation, providing essential oversight and accountability. The Board meets regularly to review operations, discuss strategic initiatives, and ensure prudent decision-making while upholding our foundational values, particularly as a founder-led entity.
1
Governance & Strategic Direction
The Board meets regularly to review organisational performance and strategic direction. They act as a crucial buffer, ensuring all decisions are made wisely and correctly, especially within a founder-led organisation. They approve all policies, major organisational changes, and strategic initiatives. The Board also reviews and approves annual budgets, major contracts, and partnership agreements, providing strategic guidance aligned with our mission and charitable purposes.
2
Financial Accountability & Reporting
Ensuring financial integrity, at least two board members maintain 24/7 access to AChA bank accounts for real-time monitoring and accountability. They rigorously review budgets, financial statements, and yearly reports to ensure responsible stewardship of funds. The Board oversees all major financial decisions, ensures compliance with ACNC reporting requirements, and maintains transparency with stakeholders through regular financial reporting.
3
Welfare, Risk & Compliance
The Board assumes ultimate liability for all welfare and child protection issues, prioritising the safety and well-being of all participants. They make critical decisions on urgent matters pertaining to insurances, liability, welfare, pastoral issues, staffing, and fair work practices. The Board regularly reviews risk management frameworks, ensures compliance with Working With Children Check requirements, oversees incident reporting procedures, and maintains robust policies for safeguarding and ethical operations across all programmes.
4
Annual General Meeting & Governance
At the Annual General Meeting (AGM), Leon Shohmelian chairs the proceedings and fields most questions, ensuring independent oversight. This structure provides appropriate separation between founder leadership and governance accountability, reinforcing transparency and best practice in our founder-led organisation.
Second Oversight Layer: Executive Committees
Australian Christian Arts maintains separate executive committees for our Orchestra and Choir programmes. These committees handle specific operational matters for their respective areas, ensuring focused leadership and effective management.
These committees serve as a vital link between day-to-day operations and board-level governance. They identify and present operational challenges, policy needs, and strategic opportunities to the Board for consideration and approval. Executive committees also play a key role in developing programme-specific policies - such as attendance requirements, rehearsal protocols, and member expectations - ensuring these align with our broader organisational values. Additionally, they provide pastoral support and conflict resolution within their teams, addressing relational dynamics, member concerns, and interpersonal challenges with care and wisdom before escalating matters to the Board when necessary.
